Module 5 · Build for Ownership

Your ownership checklist + what's next

8 min

Let’s turn “own your stuff” into a checklist you can actually run — and then close out the course with the one honest take on what to do next.

The ownership checklist

Run this once. An afternoon now saves you a disaster later.

  • Log into your domain registrar. Confirm the domain is in your name and you control it. Turn on auto-renew so you never lose it to a missed bill.
  • Export your customer/email list and keep a copy you control. Confirm every key tool lets you export your data.
  • Collect your brand source files — logo, fonts, photos, copy — into one folder you own. Get them from any vendor who’s holding them.
  • Audit your accounts (Google Business, host, social, ads, analytics). You = owner/admin. Vendors = access only.
  • Write down what you’d walk away with if any vendor relationship ended tomorrow. Fix anything that’s a hostage.
  • Set AI tools to not train on your data; keep sensitive records out of public chatbots.

The whole course on one page

Five fixes, in order — the same picture we opened on. If you only remember this, you’re ahead of most owners:

1Find the bottleneckFix the one constraint, not the loudest symptom
2Clarify the messageOne sentence a stranger — and an AI — gets instantly
3Fix the follow-upPlug the five leaks; the first useful response wins
4Use AI practicallyAutomate the busywork; keep the judgment human
5Build for ownershipOwn the domain, the data, the content, the accounts

The honest take on what’s next

You can absolutely run this playbook yourself — that’s why we wrote it plainly. Do the diagnostic, write the one sentence, plug the leaks, stand up one agent, own your stuff. That alone puts you ahead of most businesses your size.

There’s a difference, though, between knowing the moves and having a second set of expert eyes on which one to make first, in your specific business. That’s the gap an outside operator closes — and it’s where guessing gets expensive. No pressure either way — here’s the honest read on which is which:

Do it yourself when…Get expert eyes when…
The diagnostic clearly named one constraintEvery stage scored around 5 and you can’t pick
You’ve got 2–3 hours a week to run the fixesThe fixes keep not sticking
The business is you plus a few peopleYou’re past the point where your time is the cheapest tool you have

Key takeaways
  • Run the ownership checklist once — it prevents the expensive disasters.
  • The whole course is five fixes, in order: bottleneck → message → follow-up → AI → ownership.
  • You can do this yourself; expert eyes just help you pick the right fix first.
If you get stuck

Finished and not sure where to start? Start with whatever module made you wince the hardest. That flinch is your bottleneck talking. Go fix that one thing this week — then come back for the next.
